Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

Explore Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins stands for "Maiden of the Rock" or "Sculpture of Lady" in the Maya language, and is located across from the quaint riverside village of San Jose Succotz in western Belize. This well-visited Mayan city can be visited by crossing a hand-cranked ferry daily and is only a 1 mile drive to the visitors center where vehicles are parked before disembarking for a short walk to the main plazas. This classic period site provides a stunning 360 degree vista of the surrounding towns and villages atop "El Castillo", one of the tallest structures in Belize that rises some 40 meters above plaza level. The site's main plaza only occupies around 1 square mile, but the entire site covers several square miles. It is believed that Xunantunich was a site of importance, lasting a century longer than other sites in its region and was a force in geo-political matters. If you enjoy short but scenic and easy-going tours with rich history, then this tour is perfect for you!
